Lex Luther to play Freddy Kruger?

According to sources at movies.com ,  Michael Bay (Transformers, Pearl Harbor, Armageddon, The Island) is directing the “remake”, you heard me, remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

Robert Englund, the man who made Freddy Kruger an 80s icon, won’t be donning the striped sweater, fedora, razor glove or burned skin this time. Instead, Lex Luther (Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum) will rise to the occasion by stepping into the skin of the dream stalking killer

Besides the bald head, which works for Freddy because he’s terribly scarred, this “young Turk” has nothing on Robert. His acting chomps alone can’t convey the sinister forces with Freddy.

OK, the problem really isn’t with casting Rosenbaum as Freddy. No. The real problem is having Michael Bay at the helm of any HORROR film! He did…OK, with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. The reason Texas remake did so well is that they brought back the original cinematographer (director of photography) to see that the visual “theme” of the original was consistent in the remake.

Remakes as they are tend to be HORRIBLE in their attempt to build from the original.

A sole exception is John Carpenter’s 1982 classic,  The Thing. That film built upon the original theme but took it to the next level with a shape shifting alien that becomes members of the outpost team. Scary as hell when I first saw it and the sfx were amazing for 1982.

Michael Bay on the other hand, will no doubt seek to include explosions, car chases, gun fights, crazy and widely over done sfx’s to convey his “visual” of Freddy.

I hope to hell this film never gets off the ground. As corny as Freddy and company are today. Wes Craven and Robert Englund cut a deep notch into the psychosis of the 80s slasher genre and don’t need Michael SFX Bay and Boom Boom Bruckhemier screwing it up!!!
