No Country For Old Men was edited with Final Cut Pro
No Country For Old Men, the latest classic by the Coen Brothers, took top honors at this year’s Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
What amazes me the most, is their NLE (Non Linear Editing) system.
This film was editing with Apple’s Final Cut Pro
Anyone in the TV/Film industry knows that Avid has ruled as the dominate editing system. Hell, the first film to win an Academy Awared for digital editing was in 1996 with, ”The English Patient“, edited by the great Walter Murch.
When I went to film school we had two choices: Avid or Final Cut. I worked on both, but developed a love for Final Cut and took it to heart as my premiere editing system. All of my personal films were cut (assembled) with Final Cut, while only a small amount of shorts I’ve worked on were cut with Avid.
So, when Academy Award winning writer/directors, like the Coen Brothers, discuss how they used FCP to edit “No County For Old Men”, it solidifies that FCP can and does stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Avid giant.
I read an article in student filmmakers magazine a few years back that said, “Avid was designed by editors and that Final Cut Pro was created by designers, with the help of editors”.
What that gave FCP over Avid was a more intuitive interface. What takes you 3 steps in Avid, takes only 1 in FCP. However, in all fairness, Avid editors will say the same thing about FCP. It has and always will come down to personal preference with editing systems.
Still…., I can’t help but jump up and down after hearing that the Coen Brothers used Apple’s products to assemble their film.
