WE Channel’s new series, High School Confidential, follows 12 young lady’s through all 4 years of high school.

I love this kind of documentary film-making. And to boot, it was created by a 1st time filmmaker - a mother in the community who wanted to REALLY capture the life young coeds go through in high school.

With all the networks and their supposed reality-based shows (MTV, VH1, Bravo, E! - these four sensationalize the subject matter for the sake of ratings and endorsements), its really refreshing to see a network, other the A&E, Discovery (History), PBS, etc…, show something that’s REAL and not scripted.

Granted, ALL reality shows, even on the famed PBS and Discovery networks are molded in the editing suite, but the producers let life…happen, rather then direct it (watch anything on MTV, VH1, Bravo, E! and you’ll see just that - directed reality, which isn’t reality at all). Can anyone really think that The Hills or Laguana Beach is real? Its MTV soap opera drama that is highly structured.

I was only able to see the first 20 minutes of last nights premiere episode. Compelling stuff! To really see the highs and lows these 12 young lady’s go through is somewhat voyeuristic, but they embrace the camera, as if its just another person, and that justifies are “shared experience” as we are now treated as just another person invited to “the party”.

The show was edited with an Avid system. In an earlier post of mine No Country For Old Men, I talk about the Avid and Final Cut Pro editing world. Well, this series (most major networks use Avid) was assembled with an Avid.  I can’t explain how I know that, I just do. I work in TV/Web and my company compromises the most Avid workstations in Philadelphia and you get a “feel” for Avid edited projects when you see them.

If you get a chance check out the series, it airs on Mondays at 10PM

Here’s the trailer for the series

  • Brent,
I had heard about this show but haven’t seen it yet. The editorial product on the website is fantastic and really compelling. Do you know if the show is doing well?
